In his own words, Dr. Doctor is a “tortured, alcoholic pioneer in the field of medicine.” Whenever a crazy medical emergency comes up, Dr. Flatbread (who owns and operates Flatbread Hospital) reluctantly calls in Dr. Doctor to save the day. Almost every time, this results in Dr. Doctor 100 percent making the situation way, way worse. Thankfully, the dutiful Nurse Woman is always there to help steer the ship back into calmer waters.
Sometime in the early 21st century, it was seemingly decided that every protagonist had to be an alcoholic, antihero genius. Gregory House. Rick Sanchez. Sterling Archer. While we obviously love these characters, Dr. Doctor is a send-up of all that. I don’t think anyone would think Dr. Doctor is cool, and we go to great lengths to show that he’s actually just kind of an asshole. We would like to continue exploring this trope with this character, as well as sending up other medical shows and using it as a vehicle for satire, as you can see in the pilot.
